Statement of Need
This course is designed to address current advances in the field of breast imaging and interventions. Clinical indications, imaging techniques, and protocols evolve as information and technology disseminate throughout the field. Advances in digital mammography, ultrasound and MRI are impacting the way physicians diagnose, evaluate, and biopsy suspicious masses, and techniques to improve interpretation and patient assessment have become increasingly important to help physicians make intelligent cost-effective decisions for optimal breast cancer detection and management in a multimodality world. This course will target identified practice gaps through lectures by experts in the field, case studies to provide physicians with the opportunity to evaluate images with expert feedback, and Q&A sessions.
Target Audience
This course is intended for practicing radiologists, radiology technologists, nurses, physician assistants, fellows, residents, scientists, and anyone interested in advanced applications within the field of breast imaging.
Learning Objectives
For the "Breast MRI Essentials" Pre-Session March 3rd:
- Summarize the indications, strengths and weaknesses for utilizing breast MRI with regard to screening, staging and monitoring response to treatment.
- Improve diagnostic outcomes by applying current breast MRI protocols and interpretation methods.
For the General Session March 4-6:
- Assess the current status and future applications of advanced breast imaging technologies.
- Implement state-of-the-art digital mammography techniques and protocols into clinical practice.
- Differentiate abnormal findings on film screen and digital mammography, ultrasound, and MRI, and correlate findings for optimal lesion evaluation and localization.
- Evaluate the appropriate use of BI-RADs for reporting and be familiar with recent updates.
- Optimize imaging methods to reduce the number of false-positive mammography interpretations.
- Assess benign and malignant breast lesions using the appropriate ACR BI-RADS criteria.
- Implement current techniques for the sonographic evaluation of breast masses.
- Analyze the applications, techniques, and pitfalls of stereotactic, ultrasound-guided, and MRI-guided biopsy and employ appropriate image-guided breast interventional procedures.
