Learning Objectives
This course is intended for practicing radiologists, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, and medical professionals such as nurses, radiologic technologists, physician's assistants, and industry scientists. It will review current techniques in neuroradiology and musculoskeletal radiology.
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe the latest advances in MR imaging of the brain, spine, and sinuses
- Optimize imaging of epilepsy and stroke
- Examine and discuss the role of MR in vertebroplasty
- Optimize imaging of the neurovascular system, including hemorrhages and malformations
- Implement current MRI techniques to assess shoulder injuries and treatment
- Enhance MRI of the post-operative knee and shoulder
- Optimize MRI in the setting of orthopedic hardware
- Discuss the role of imaging in diagnosing and treating osseous stress injuries
- Utilize MR to image the wrist, hip, ankle, and foot
- Discuss the role of imaging in interventional sports medicine
Statement of Need
Advances in MRI have continued as new technology develops and clinical applications expand and mature. Parallel to the advances in MRI technology and clinical uses has been the move toward minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of disease. Sophisticated imaging is central to minimally invasive medical care, particularly in disorders of the central nervous system, where invasive techniques are associated with significant morbidity. The appropriate use of MRI has become more challenging, because many of the newer techniques are more complex, and because more detailed knowledge of disease and anatomy is required beyond what was sufficient in the past. The continuing medical education offered by this course is essential for physicians and other health care providers to stay current with these changes in technology, diagnosis and treatment in key areas of neurologic disease.
MR imaging now permits excellent depiction of bone and joint disorders, giving clinicians much more detailed diagnoses than in the past. These details have helped refine practical anatomical and clinical knowledge of many of the disorders. In turn, increased clinical expectations feed back to diagnostic imaging, stimulating an appetite for more detail, more biomechanical insight, and higher expectations from the interpreting radiologist. This course is designed to provide practicing radiologists with essential information to help them in clinical practice. In particular, highly specialized material on advanced bone and joint injuries both pre- and post-operatively will be covered, enabling the attendees to provide better care for referring physicians and their patients.
Accreditation
The Stanford University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
