Learning Objectives
This course is designed to address the needs of individuals with an interest in the fundamental principles and clinical applications of MRI. Concepts are introduced through lectures and workshops and reinforced by clinical examples and applications. The target audience is comprised of practicing radiologists, other physicians, technologists and trainees interested in the evolving technology and applications of MRI. This program will be marketed regionally, nationally, and internationally. The material requires some background knowledge and may be challenging for those without any familiarity with MRI.
- Describe basic NMR and MRI physical principles
- Describe and employ current diagnostic MRI advancements for faster and improved image quality to diagnose and treat disease
- Discuss physical mechanisms and physiological processes contributing to MRI image contrast
- Employ faster imaging strategies and contrast manipulation methods to improve MRI performance
- Incorporate new techniques into clinical MRI scanning protocols and evaluate their potential impact on radiological practices
- Utilize MRI for vascular applications
- Implement MRI for advanced cardiac and breast imaging
- Utilize MRI and MRS for advanced neuroimaging
- Identify and appropriately manage MRI safety issues
Statement of Need
Magnetic resonance imaging is in a state of constant advancement as new techniques are developed to improve patient care. These new techniques result in improved image quality, improved diagnostic and treatment therapies, and a decrease in the amount of time it takes to scan patients. The intent of this course is to address the need of practicing radiologists and technologists to gain an understanding of the physics and engineering of MRI. Because many physicians do not have a strong physics background, but are well versed clinical aspects of MRI, this information will be presented in a format that is comprehensible to physicians with very little physics background.
